We are deeply saddened by the passing of our dear colleague, Aidan O’leary. Our hearts and prayers are with Aidan’s family and loved ones. His passing is a big loss for the humanitarian community and the people we serve. We will miss him dearly.

Aidan was not only World Health Organization (WHO)’s dynamic director in the fight against polio, but was a true champion for the most vulnerable children, having served with UNICEF and other humanitarian agencies in some of the most difficult regions in the world.

The re-emergence of polio in Gaza after a quarter century is another sobering reminder of how chaotic, desperate & dangerous the situation has become.   We cannot allow polio to spread in Gaza and threaten not just Gazans, but all children in the region. unicef.org/press-releases…

But to prevent the spread of polio, we need conditions on the ground that have not been present in Gaza for 10 months – access for the necessary supplies, and security for the health workers who will administer vaccines.

We need a ‘polio pause’ so vaccines can get into Gaza and be safely distributed before it’s too late. And most of all, we need a ceasefire.
