Keir Starmer makes out that tax breaks for farmers / family businesses are some kind of aberration, but they are actually the NORM in most countries that export food to the UK! I've not seen this argument made much, so here's a thread on how these new IHT rules compare. ๐Ÿงต

Robbie Moore MP Donโ€™t forget the rest of the family business community, shops , restaurants, builders, we are all affected by the removal of BPR. IHT is based on a commercial valuation not assets in the company. This valuation will cripple family businesses

'Support from the left for inheritance tax on UK farms is fundamentally misconceived. It will speed up the transfer of farmland to big finance, not oppose it. Land reform to break up the vast estates - which I support - should be designed for just that, not attack normal

Gareth It's how you know they're achingly middle class & just larping as revolutionaries because they feel guilty that life's been good to them It's always the same as well, "the noble savage who only does what he does out of necessity" it robs people of all their agency.

Our continuing staffing woes. This a.m. we had a Slovenian outfit come from Peterborough, 44 mile drive. They didn't get out their vehicle as they don't work in rain & then they drove home again. Didn't get the photo, so here is one of bunched onions, one of our jobs in the rain

Our central estimate puts the fiscal cost of the transition to net zero by 2050 at 21% of GDP. Two-thirds stems from lost fuel duty and other receipts as electric vehicles replace petrol cars. We also assume government funds 36% of total net zero transition investment.

Mike Bird Posting this makes people so furious. We've incredibly low food prices relative to wages in the UK and Ireland. Most of continental Europe is 12-17%.

Itโ€™s almost as if these words from HM Treasury - which will have been through numerous drafts and committees staffed by taxpayer-funded and generously-pensioned and therefore financially secure staff - are deliberately designed to wind up so many of the UKโ€™s dedicated and hardy

It's not 'unearned'. It is the result of years of hard work, investment, sacrifice, planning, and trying to provide for your family and descendants. Taking any of that away is most certainly immoral.

There are no โ€œBrits in Spainโ€. Itโ€™s not possible. If a formerly British person settles in Spain they become Spanish. In fact, they are just as Spanish as a person whose family has been there 1000 years.
