A short 🧵on risk & discrimination. Early in my year I worked on the long-stay hospital closure programme. One of the things we had to deal with was public perception that people with mental health problems or learning disabilities automatically presented a risk to others.

Some individuals present a risk to others through their behaviour. The answer is to assess the risk surrounding the individual in the relevant context, not to assume that because they're part of a particular group they'll be a risk. That is discrimination.

That stigma around mental health and learning disability hasn't gone away altogether, but it's lessened. And we've worked particularly hard to address it in healthcare settings. When addressing inequalities is supposedly at the forefront of the health agenda now, we really...

...should not be adding to the stigma experienced by already marginalised groups. People with mental health problems were and are always more likely to be at risk from others than to present a risk to others themselves. I don't know the stats for people who are transgender...

...but I suspect it's a similar picture - and someone (Tara Hewitt - Girly Swot 🇺🇦🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️⛤🖖?) will know. Let's see policies made based on evidence please, not prejudice.
