W.E.B. Du Bois had one of those lives which spanned such different eras it doesn't seem possible. He was born before the Dutch Gold Coast was ceded to Britain and lived long enough that he died in independent Ghana.

It’s remarkable how many high powered business leaders with executive level experience at western firms & agencies make it to the top spot in West African governments. It used to be educators & union leaders, then mining engineers. Now it’s Deloitte & the World Bank.

On Labor Day, we remember A. Philip Randolph. In 1925, he founded the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the first Black-led union securing better wages and working conditions for many Black workers. Later, he helped organize the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.

In Indonesia, after a boda rider was killed by a cop at a protest, the whole country has lit up. This is why so many African governments seek to buy off and under-regulate them. #affankurniawan bbc.com/news/articles/…

12.89% interest per month on the loan sum of UGX 4,305,500 (if one pays the deposit of UGX 2,014,500 for the purchase of the higher end S25 Ultra at a cash price of UGX 6,320,000). Final price is UGX 8,118,000 and MTN pays itself a tidy UGX 1,798,000 for taking a risk on you.

I mean, this is right, but I think we do know a fair bit about what Capt. Ibrahim Traoré believes, as he speaks about it at great length, frequently. For example, here’s a 20 something page speech he gave last year laying out his plan for Burkina Faso. presidencedufaso.bf/wp-content/upl…

Brazil is sending its election denier to prison for 27 years. We sent ours back to the White House. Brazil already lived under military dictatorship and saw the threat clearly. We failed to protect our democracy. We need to learn from Brazil before it’s too late.

During the election, Mutharika's campaign promised boda boda riders that if elected, he would eliminate the most basic regulatory requirements - like license plates or drivers licenses. So, not a great sign.

Jane Goodall just passed. I hadn't realized she married Derek Bryceson, the British-Tanzanian MP who helped Nyerere win power in the racial quota system of pre-independence Tanganyika, and her son still lives in Tanzania.
