Gotthold Eisenstein was one of the most important mathematicians of the 19th century; despite his death of tuberculosis in 1852 at the age of 29, Gauss apparently put him in the same league as Archimedes and Newton. This thread is about a mystery from his last paper. 1/n

From our Interview with Claudio Arezzo: "I think the perception that the younger people get from school is that mathematics is a subject where there is somebody who knows everything, who asks you questions, and the question is whether you know the answer." (1/4)

The Euler-MacLaurin Summation Formula. Several years ago we posted one version of this formula, and here's a second involving an infinite series of odd derivatives of the underlying function. #math #calculus #MathematicalAnalysis

I found her—right here in Stegemühlenweg! After weeks of searching, Emmy Noether’s plaque was just around the corner from my home in Göttingen. No wonder she remained so invisible in her time… but that ends now. Let’s make her visible. Let’s shout her name from the rooftops.

For the past few days for some reason I have been thinking constantly how Zack Snyder’s DC trilogy did to superhero movies what Watchmen did to comics. It shattered the illusion of innocence. 🧵

Fleischer Superman cartoons (My dad gave me the VCD as a present after we got our first home PC) and Zack Snyder's Man of Steel. I also grew up on the DCAU but for me somehow Batman overshadowed Superman in that.

The fundamental theorem of #algebra for proper maps. It's an interesting generalization for non-polynomial functions. The familiar case of complex polynomials follows. #math #calculus #topology

When I joined IIT Mandi I reached out to Professor V. Balakrishnan for advice on teaching. He replied with a thoughtful and gracious response.

The Mittag-Leffler Theorem from complex analysis. For any open set in the complex plane we can always find meromorphic functions with any pole structure that we wish. The theorem has an extension to non-compact #Riemann surfaces. #math #calculus
