Why do we ignore brain state during stimulation? Jessica M Ross, PhD developed sensory entrained TMS (seTMS) - sync TMS to musical beats to time stimulation when circuits are most receptive. Could be a low-cost, scalable way to boost outcomes. More to come.

There's a strand of the MAHA philosophy that's motivated in no small part by a bias against medicine—which often comes close to an aversion to illness, itself. In this philosophy, sunlight and exercise are good because they help healthy people stay healthy. Supplements are good

It’s wild how much change is possible in this life. From relearning to talk post-TBI, to full blown heroin addiction, to a life beyond anything I could have imagined. Im very fortunate to not only be alive, but to have been selected to speak at 2025 TEDxBoulder!

Excited to share our latest work is up on bioRxiv! Looking at capillary flow speed changes we show that psilocybin prolongs the neurovascular coupling response to a visual stimulus. 🍄🔬🧠🩸 Preprint: biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

New preprint from collaboration with SchafferNishimuraLab - 2p imaging of psilocybin's effects on neurovascular coupling 🔬 We found that psilocybin prolongs the neurovascular response, independent of neural activity. This affects how we should interpret fMRI BOLD studies of #psychedelics‼️

Can psychedelics benefit mental health without the trip? Boris D Heifets is testing ketamine under anesthesia—and challenging assumptions about how these therapies work. Listen now on Up First from NPR: n.pr/4ogOorT

Check out our latest paper in Nature Neuroscience (rdcu.be/ey7yk). This was a great collaboration with some very surprising results! Seems a glutamate burst & proximate IEG expression might not be necessary for structural plasticity induced by 5-HT2A partial agonists.

New preprint + thread 🧵 #Psychedelics induce the formation of new synapses, but where do they connect? Our rabies tracing study reveals that #psilocybin shifts connectivity across specific cortical networks. biorxiv.org/content/10.110… 1/12

Nonhallucinogenic psychoplastogens have antidepressant-like effects and promote cortical neuroplasticity through the same biochemical pathway as classic psychedelics, but don't cause immediate glutamate burst or IEG activation Olson Lab Institute for Psychedelics and Neurotherapeutics nature.com/articles/s4159…

Dr. Max Feinstein visited Stanford's Dream Lab to explore Boris Heifets' research on anesthesia-induced dreams. By removing surgery from the equation, Heifets’ team studies how these brain states arise and how they might be harnessed for mental health. bit.ly/45Bu8IR

Jim Hudspeth has died 💔 I am so sad. He was probably my favorite hearing researcher of all time. Absolute genius and also generous - he spent hours on the phone advising me on my career even tho we barely knew each other. May his memory be a blessing. ted.com/talks/jim_huds…
