Yesterday brought heartbreaking news as we learned that another life was lost on the train tracks in Summit, NJ. Tragically, this is not an isolated incident. It is at least the third such loss our community has endured in the past 2 years.

Many previous tragedies have involved individuals intentionally stepping in front of oncoming trains. As someone who has lived & worked in Summit for over 30 years-as a therapist, a mother of 2 adult children, my heart breaks on many levels each time news like this reaches us.

These events ripple far beyond the victim & their family, to whom I extend my deepest & most sincere sympathies. They reverberate through the lives of the many community members who cross their path. A tragedy like this touches the entire fabric of a town.

Equally concerning is the difficult truth that these events sometimes occur in clusters. When a person hears of a suicide, especially in a close-knit community, they may begin to contemplate actions they otherwise would not have. This is why our collective response matters.

I want to encourage all of us to “check in” w/one another. Reach out to your neighbors. Ask how they are doing. Offer a moment of connection, a gesture of support, or simply your presence. Then check in again—next week, next month, whenever someone comes to mind.

This can be the mail carrier who always waves, the EMT who works long shifts, a school counselor under immense strain, or a family grieving a terrible loss. Even a brief conversation or kind word can remind someone that they matter & that they aren't walking through life alone.
