Economist researching cities, housing, transport, and energy. I focus on Aotearoa New Zealand and Australia, with European dalliances. And some chaff.

Recently Stats NZ revised down NZ's estimated population by ~45k to reflect final 2023 Census results. That change affects a bunch of per-capita stats - including GDP. ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฟ Real GDP per capita is now +5.4% since Q1 2017 - not +4.5%. Still abysmal, but a bit less grim than before.

Apart from this graph being very daft, I think it's also unfortunate because high dairy prices leave New Zealand's economy much better off.

Your regular reminder that: 1/ many olde buildings in Wellington are at the end of their lives and should be completely demolished, and 2/ it's a travesty that our policies have, for decades, prevented such redevelopment from happening.

my biggest character flaw that i consider an asset when a group of people walk in a side-by-side line taking up the entire sidewalk and wont move when im walking toward them, i refuse to move and barrel through like a bowling ball smashing through pins

Poland was 35% poorer than Hungary in 1990, now it's 7% richer (GDP per capita, 2015 prices, but it doesn't matter qualitatively). If you look at it carefully, the bulk of the catch-up was during global recessions. Do we know why? It seems like an important part of Polish success

BREAKING: A trad-wife influencer convention in D.C. went off the rails today when dozens got sick after drinking samples of raw milk, and threw up in the auditorium during a talk by a founder of a company that runs "natural immunity daycares for unvaccinated children."

Itโ€™s weird how weโ€™ve decided that itโ€™s people in the most expensive stage of their lives who should be taxed the most whilst those at the life stage with the least costs (pre aged care) get taxed the least.

Fascinating to see the volatility in New Zealand's GDP per capita growth rates compared to Australia. And relative trends in GDP per capita between the two countries is usually a leading indicator of net migration flows.
