We have loved celebrating - but it's also an important reminder that reading really can transform outcomes for children.

That's why our proposals explore what can be done to support children and families in the early years:

We need to work backwards from a child reading a book. How does the book get to the child? How do we help and pay people to get the book to the child? What places do we need to do that? What conversations help? How do we remove obstacles that hinder getting books to children?

Never forget: READING FOR PLEASURE has the biggest positive impact of any factor on children's life chances. So whatever else you do, please never stop sharing books with kids. Never stop reading to them, and helping them to read. Never stop changing their lives!

So sad about the loss of Professor Benjamin Zephaniah today. What a bundle of energy he was, bringing joy to so many people’s lives with the power of his words. He was such a kind man too - he did 2 brilliant events for BookTrust on his birthday this year! British society is poorer without him.

It’s today. I’ve been trying to think back to which illustrators are most evocative of my childhood. Quentin Blake, obviously. Hergé. Scarry. The Ladybird illustrators, numerous books of facts, particularly cutaways and drawings full of detail.
