There are far better photos from those positioned at the stern but last night we enjoyed a brief encounter with Scilly Pelagic’s 5th (my 4th) South Polar Skua in a little over 12 months as we steamed back towards St. Mary’s. See Scilly Pelagics for more images & ID breakdown 🌊

Our 3rd south polar skua of the Scilly Pelagics season, a dark moulting 2cy bird, offered better & more prolonged views than the previous few records. In addition 1500+ great shears, 6 Wilson’s & a smattering of Cory’s & sooty shears, set the tone for the weekend ahead 🙌 🌊

Our September seabird expedition aboard Tall Ships Youth Trust ‘Challenger 1’ presented a rare opportunity to swim in Britain’s deepest seas! Drifting over the Whittard Channel, 185 miles southwest of the Isles of Scilly & at a depth of almost 4000m, we took the plunge! ⛵️ 🏊

Seabird Ecology Lab of #SEAGHOSTS has just started the fieldwork for band-rumped #stormpetrels in the Canaries with a great start: we've recovered the first geolocator during the first night of work!! I have one space available on the 2025 Challenger Expedition to the continental shelf edge. The 2024 trip yielded Madeiran storm-petrels, barolo shearwaters, a fea’s-type petrel, & more, in British waters. Sept 14-22 from Plymouth. Email [email protected] if interested.
