We are all Tony Armstrong on this most blessed of days. #WorldCupQualifiers
Some very exciting results that will push quantum fluids research forwards in the next few years – first observation of quantum vortices in a dipolar BEC! So glad to have been involved with Ferlaino Group’s Thomas bland, among others, in predicting this theoretically in 2019.
An unexpected highlight of UK academia: intersections between STEM and the Premier League. Public talk by Phil Giles, the DoF of Brentford FC, at NCLMathsStatsPhysics Sciences at Newcastle Newcastle University on Maths & Stats in football! Can I convince him to rescue Manchester United from its woes?
How do magnetic dipolar interactions affect vortex dynamics in 3D BECs? Exotic orbits, direction-dependent velocities and more! Find out more in our (me, Nick Parker, @dr__bag) new open source article on Physical Review A journals.aps.org/pra/abstract/1… Joint Quantum Centre, Durham–Newcastle NCLMathsStatsPhysics Sciences at Newcastle
🚨 Preprint 🚨 Pairs of antiparallel vortex lines are unstable against decay into vortex rings, as seen in aircraft contrails on a sunny day. What directional dependence might this instability exhibit in a dipolar BEC? More ⬇️ NCLMathsStatsPhysics Sciences at Newcastle arxiv.org/abs/2407.04177
