The most wonderful pre-launch tonight for Andrew North’s WAR & PEACE & WAR, thronged with Afghans, foreign correspondents from all over the world, and a truly great speech from Sarah Braybrooke at the new Ithaka Press at Bonnier UK. Out 1st August, but selling very fast already

I picked my five most beautiful UK national parks for BBC Travel. A tough ask, with so much to consider, but in the end I plumped for four classics and one curveball. What would yours be? Thanks to Graeme Green for a great interview and article. bbc.com/travel/article…

A delightful morning touring London bookshops with @NorthAndrew as he signs copies of War & Peace & War. I loved editing Andrew’s deep dive into Afghanistan. Read it to understand this amazing, complex country, on the anniversary of the West’s withdrawal from Kabul.

“Will you write anything about being here?” “Maybe,” I said. “Write good things about us.” An extremely gripping extract from War & Peace & War which details @NorthAndrew's kidnapping by the Taliban economist.com/1843/2024/08/0…

Just finished @NorthAndrew‘s War&Peace&War (lots of parallels there to what and how is happening now everywhere from Ukraine to Georgia), and next between Gary Shteyngart‘s Absurdistan and Yaroslav Trofimov’s Our Enemies Will Vanish chose the latter. Sorry, Gary!

'A British colonial army was defeated in the region in 1880. More than 120 years later, few officials in London knew anything about that history. Why was Britain going back?' @NorthAndrew on Helmand in openDemocracy, from War & Peace & War bit.ly/3AwJ9jf

What’s happening in Gaza, the fact it goes on and on, day after day, massacre after massacre, ًis so horrific it’s hard to put into words, a world-changing crime against humanity facilitated and enabled by global leaders who should have fought with every last breath to stop it
