Prof. Casanova illustrating how 2 papers on 4 children with inborn errors of immunity can result in the discovery of the underlying cause of 2 million COVID19 deaths. #ESID2022 Casanova Lab

#ESID2022 reunion (on ABBA tunes) for half the original “NY mycobacteria group” Casanova Lab with Dr Vanessa Bryant, Satoshi Okada and BogunovicLab 🤩 -and amazing science by each of them! (missing Carolina Prando, Xiao-Fei Kong, Marcela Moncada-Velez and of course Stephanie_Boisson-Dupuis)

Dominant-negative mutations in RELA thus underlie a novel form of type I interferonopathy with systemic autoinflammatory and autoimmune manifestations due to excessive IFN, probably triggered by otherwise non-pathogenic TLR ligands Journal of Experimental Medicine doi.org/10.1084/jem.20…

Moriya, Nakano, Satoshi Okada @Hiroshima_Uni et al. establish a novel form of IEI due to DN RELA mutations as a cause of chronic mucocutaneous ulcerations with autoinflammatory and/or autoimmune manifestations. bit.ly/3OUwzzq Casanova Lab #Immunodeficiency

Back home after a week of amazing science, hikes and (old & new) friendships at the 2nd International Symposium on Inborn Errors of Immunity (#IEI) in the Northern Atlantic with current and previous HGID lab members 🇫🇴 Thank you Casanova Lab

Bastard, Aurelie Cobat, Casanova Lab and colleagues find that auto-Abs against IFN-α confer a greater risk of #COVID19 pneumonia in children. hubs.la/Q02fkJ8v0

1/ We are proud of our former trainees and will be highlighting their accomplishments from time-to-time. First up is Satoshi Okada, appointed Chief Professor of the Department of Pediatrics at Hiroshima University in 2020 and advanced to Head of the Program of Medicine in 2024.

6/ Inspired by hikes with our lab, Satoshi Okada resumed hiking last year. Here he is with his medical dept atop Mt Daisen, one of Japan's 100 famous mountains, 3-4 hours from Hiroshima. All 18 members of his team, with their kids, made it to the summit, a climb of 1,000 meters!
