The popularity of the welfare state in Nordic countries stems in large part from the fact that people think they are getting a good deal from public services. If they didn't, their attitude to taxation would be quite different. Efficiency and quality in public services matter.

RCT introduction of a pollution market in Surat, Gujarat. Pollution fell by 20–30%, and efficiently — gains came from the firms who could cut pollution most effectively. Mortality benefits are *25 times* costs. An incredible state/research collaboration. 1/2

When Soviet scientists won the Nobel Prize, they couldn't bring their families to the ceremonies. They had unrivalled positions in the scientific establishment, but authorities still feared they would defect.

Huh, this is super cool if true. A common food dye, used in Doritos, can turn tissues like the skin of mice transparent and allow people to see what's happening in their organs. Lots of applications not just in medical diagnostics, but biology research more broadly.

It is basically unfathomable to build like this in North America. This entire project is being done for under $40B CAD, or under $150M/km. To compare, we recently estimated an above ground pedestrian/bike path in Toronto at $75M/km ☠️

Deep fried rack of lamb is one of the pinnacle moves for flavour vs impressiveness vs work, because it’s tasty and people think it’s fancy but it’s very little work. You just sous vide the lamb ahead of time and stick it in the fridge and then pull it and deep fry it at dinner.

Kids should get to vote (parents can exercise this for kids that are too small) also, we should have fixed 13 month calendar with each month having exactly 4 weeks. The remaining day would be a floating "new years day." The dates would always map to the same days of the week.
