I know there’s a lot of news around today - and a lot of sports news - but this is one of the greatest achievements by a British athlete, ever. I’m so happy he’s done it. theguardian.com/sport/article/…

A first female chancellor; a housing secretary who has lived in social housing; an education secretary who had free school meals; Timpson as probation minister; a PM who proudly claims his working class heritage — a government of the talents and lived experience.

On early release for prisoners, the issue is not will they go on to reoffend. We know many will - 45% of ex-offenders are back in prison within a year as it is. The issue is what can be done to improve appalling reoffending rates. Simply keeping people inside for longer isn't it

Things that would help: housing support so those leaving prison have somewhere to live, addiction and mental health care plans both before and after release, proper job-training and education support while inside, and a probation service that actually functions...

When I interviewed Chris Atkins last year, this is the bit that really stood out to me. We set people up to fail, and then act shocked when they do. If you don’t sympathise with the offenders, sympathise with the victims the current system is failing newstatesman.com/the-weekend-in…

Today we’ve taken the first step to bring our railways back under public ownership and deliver more reliable services for passengers. Great British Railways will manage the network and public services under one body, creating a unified, simplified rail system.
