The situation at Heathrow today should make us think more about infrastructure resilience, dependencies and cascading risks. Especially with extreme weather risks increasing so rapidly from climate change. theconversation.com/heathrow-fire-…

A new study by van Westen et al. shows that the #tippingpoint of the Atlantic overturning circulation #AMOC is also found in a high-resolution ocean model which resolves ocean eddies. A first, but no surprise to AMOC experts. 🧵

1.5°C isn’t a political target, but a physical limit. We’re set to exhaust the remaining carbon budget in just a few years. Yet policy assumes huge CO₂ removal later, instead of cutting fast now. 1st of 3 posts on Earth’s resilience & where we stand. linkedin.com/pulse/earth-lo…

Is Earth losing resilience? Accelerated warming, weakening forest carbon sinks, and Earth albedo change point to shifts in feedbacks, and possibly a higher climate sensitivity. This may mean a smaller carbon budget. More on this in part 2 of my series. linkedin.com/pulse/earth-lo…

Rainfall anomalies for the last 3 Marchs. 2 deluges and a drought. Our climate becoming more volatile and unpredictable. And it’s going to get more so.

Three views on climate: Scientist, studying physical systems: immediate significant action is needed. Insurance professionals with dollar exposure to the risks: immediate significant action is needed. Academic economists, studying subjective utility functions: not a problem.

Growing heating rate of Earth due due to rising greenhouse gases & declining aerosol particles combined with a return of subsurface heat following a switch from extended La Niña to El Niño to explain exceptional jump in global temperature up to 2023-2024: doi.org/10.1038/s41612…

We’ve had a change of Government. We’ve had no change in the inadequate action on adapting to inevitable and increasing climate change. theguardian.com/environment/20…

Out today in Nature, our new paper on the drivers of the extreme summertime heating of the North Atlantic during 2023. Temperatures across much of the basin warmed to record high levels in the space of just a few months. The impacts on climate and ecosystems were severe. A thread

Our piece in The Conversation - Australia + New Zealand today: As US climate data-gathering is gutted, Australian forecasting is now at real risk theconversation.com/as-us-climate-… And it's not just Australia that will lose out. Forecasting all around the world will be set back decades if these cuts go through.

Accelerating heating causing recalculation of times of reaching future thresholds. 1.5°C has effectively been reached. On 2015 rates of warming this wasn’t predicted till 2042. 2° now likely mid/late 2030s. Somewhere between 3 & 4° - irrecoverable ecological collapse.
