Lugworm, Burnham Overy Staithe, Norfolk. This remarkable marine worm can hold its breath for a long time. Its haemoglobin can transport 40 times more oxygen than human haemoglobin. Quite useful when you're exposed to low tide conditions twice a day!

Arnold Ridley experienced unimaginable horrors in both world wars. Battle of the Somme (19K British soldiers killed first day): bayonetted through the hand, suffered a fractured skull, gas attack, shrapnel and shell shock. 2WW: evacuated from Dunkirk with the BEF. A true hero.

Shocking and sad news. Prof Meldrum carried the torch for scientific inquiry into the twilight world of relict hominoids after the passing of Dr Grover Krantz. In Gigantopithecus, Bigfoot was never very far away.
