Journalism: The act of saying something about an important topic which is almost true - i.e. close to the truth but not quite true - for money.

Nice quote, which likely applies to all educational assessment, across jurisdictions & subject domains. Will be adding to slides for the next iteration of our MA module on assessment.

Often UK broadcast media operates like a playground trouble-maker, trying to egg on other people to fight with each other. Media: “So you’re calling him a liar?” Politician 1: “Errr, ok.” Media: “She called you a liar. How do you feel?” Politician 2: “Errr, not very good.”

Again, a young man killed a group of strangers, in this case 3 small children with a knife in #Southport. And again Tom Nichols’s “Lost Boys” thesis seems pertinent. theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/… Not sure what early interventions we attempt in the UK, to try to head off these cases.

Paul Graham Tom Forth It’s unfortunate that Musk’s amazing skill for making vehicles doesn’t transfer to managing a social media platform. Raptor’s become more efficient at powering flight🚀; Twitter/X mainly became more efficient at spreading hate & misinformation🤬. x.com/paulg/status/1…

Shayan Sardarizadeh Ok: when the owner of this site - who lives in & is the citizen of another country - is deliberately agitating for unrest in the UK, it’s time to stop posting, liking or sharing anything on X, & time to have another look at Bluesky. x.com/shayan86/statu…

As Elon Musk continues to both predict & promote “civil war” in the UK & other European countries, it echoes the chapter on politics in Walter Isaacson’s Musk biography. Musk: “I’m just wired for war, basically” His brother: “I have an empathy gene, unlike him”

Things that (some) schoolteachers say about research, which actual researchers don’t say about research: “The research has *proven* that this intervention/approach should be followed.” Sadly, social science research rarely “proves” substantial conclusions with 100% certainty.

Struck by hearing lots of careers talks delivered to secondary schoolkids in England where a core message is: “Choose subjects you’re interested in.” With the risks & upheaval (AI, geopolitics, struggling🇬🇧economy), maybe we need a little more consideration of employability.

False myths about China🇨🇳 which UK🇬🇧 media & ppl still often believe: - Winnie the Pooh is censored on China’s Internet. - There’s a “social credit system”. - China is in decline. - Western people’s approval for their political system is higher than Chinese people’s for theirs.
