.Project ANAR’s oped in Truthout is a heart wrenching portrayal of the unique struggles of Afghans seeking refuge. Not only are Afghans displaced as a direct result of our gov’t’s $8 trillion “War on Terror” but the US offers virtually no accessible pathways for refugee status.

Afghans fleeing the wreckage of decades-long war are forced to make an 11-country journey to claim asylum in the U.S. only to be targeted for detention and face systemic barriers to practicing their faith while detained due to anti-Muslim racism and structural Islamophobia.

“We must continue to work toward ending the systems that displace our communities — and also the ones that exclude them, force them through insurmountable barriers, and then criminalize them for who they are…” said Laila Ayub, Project ANAR co-founder and director.

Last week, Senator Dick Durbin asked U.S. Department of Justice to investigate whether it has been discriminatorily targeting migrants from Muslim-majority countries for immigration prosecutions in West Texas.
