When I was in 6th grade, Marty brought me to a trial in Brooklyn fed court. It was two years after 9/11 and he was defending an intellectually disabled man accused of plotting a terrorist attack. Marty insisted it was entrapment. The government won and the man got 30 years.

A few years ago, the Times ran an extraordinary story detailing the scheme against Shahawar Matin Siraj. He is still in prison, knitting stuffed Pokemon. I suspect it was one of Marty's most painful losses. nytimes.com/2021/04/15/mag…

I learned he'd helped bring a lawsuit on behalf of the Black Panthers in 1971 that led to court ordered restrictions on how the NYPD can surveil protesters. He was instrumental in so many other cases, from Attica to Occupy.

Super proud of my dad. I'll miss him, but so will the progressive legal community and all the lawyers he's mentored and activists he's advised and defended. Pretty cool to leave a legacy like that. (Thank you, Gideon, for this thread 💜)
