Wouldn't the implementation of Plan U *in full* proposed by Richard Sever Michael Eisen John Inglis take away most of these problems? I know it's a distant call right now but I'm sure preprinting + public reviewing + curation models would take care of this!
@valentynbez DORA John Innes Centre The Sainsbury Laboratory I disagree. Signing DORA means you should heckle and call upon your colleagues when they use journals as proxy for excellence. Better than nothing. It helps nudge the culture and empowers the next gen to change things.
Pavithran Narayanan π¨π»βπ¬π±π§¬π¬ Michael Eisen John Inglis In a word: yes. I remain baffled that with 20 years of debate, abundant evidence of problematic business models and their universal global application & a spectrum of opinion on peer review, that funders don't see the public access solution staring them in the face: preprints.
Pavithran Narayanan π¨π»βπ¬π±π§¬π¬ Michael Eisen John Inglis This of course is Plan U - which by design does not cover peer review but would make all papers free as preprints NOW. We can then spend the next 20 years arguing about how/when/whether/who to pay for formal peer review... journals.plos.org/plosbiology/arβ¦
Update: This is my alt account The Liver Doctor π€ALTπ₯ - a back up in case of future blackouts. Do follow me there too - for concise interesting takes and also major updates in case of unforseen events. Meanwhile: waiting for formalities to finish for this main account to come alive.
Publishing #papers of interest Vs publishing #reviews of interest! eLife - the journal editorial says they don't select interesting papers but those that will generate interesting reviews - interesting, indeed!!!ππ #PeerReview #Publishing #Science #eLife elifesciences.org/articles/100571
