/ We found global priority regions for conservation of threatened amphibians, birds, mammals & reptiles reflect those for freshwater animals BUT different threats and habitats mean freshwater animals need targeted conservation action.

/ Finally, abiotic factors (water stress & eutrophication) are very poor surrogates for freshwater animals. Conservation strategies that rely on abiotic indicators should be re-evaluated because they could lead to harmful decisions.

/ Why should we care? Freshwaters are highly biodiverse and are key for ecosystem services, human livelihoods & economies. They must be protected for nature and people alike. Illustration by Van Wangye/Synchronicity Earth (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0)

/ We hope this dataset & recommendations from our paper will be integrated into evidence-based conservation, management & policy measures. Let’s bend the curve for freshwater biodiversity loss! nature.com/articles/s4158…

Local genetic reference sequences can be essential for species specific studies. Applying what worked for a species elsewhere in the world (in this case largetooth sawfish, Pristis pristis) may not work where you are!!! biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
