Two recent purchases I’m eager to dive into.

My local thrift store always has wonderful books. I can never resist.

This is what I do with my weekends now, instead of going to bars or concerts: I find used bookstores and build my library. Today, a 1949 hardcover of 1984 for $3, among other deals.

I’m behind on deadlines, but all I want to do is swim in the 90-degree heat and read Iris Murdoch. She feels like the best of old friends.

Christ, is this fun to read.

Bought Kurt Vonnegut, Virginia Woolf, and Miriam Toews today at the Kenyon College Bookstore. Roadtrip a smashing success in book purchases alone (ask me about my Buffalo Goodwill and Saratoga Springs used finds)…

Back from the road trip with one additional book, an Allen Ginsberg reader from a superb little book barn (cash only) in Manchester, VT. It’s called the Wheelwright Imaginarium and it’s a new destination.

Next up:

I’m just starting Goblin Mode by Caroline Hagood (out in September) and am absolutely catapulted by its energy. This is definitely what I needed to revive myself after a long road trip. I can’t wait to see how it unfurls.

My 17-year-old is pushing me to read East of Eden in tandem. There is no question I will do this. Multiple books, then, at once—reading many at once.
