The Ebony Test Kitchen is a living, breathing testament to the power of Black excellence and innovation in the culinary world. The kitchen is a place where recipes were reimagined, flavors were explored and inspiring and delicious stories were shared.

#OnThisDay in 1865, General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, TX to read Order No. 3, which affirmed the end of slavery in the states of the former Confederacy. This momentous occasion has been celebrated as #Juneteenth — a combination of “June” & “19th” — for over 150 years.

A scholar, collector, curator and historian —Charles Blockson was a man who persevered to rescue African American history. He leaves behind a rich legacy of educating generations about the brilliance of Harriet Tubman and others through his amazing collection.

Hip-hop voices the concerns and aspirations of Black communities and other across America. A rich part of American history and culture, it continues to evolve around the globe today, bridging generations. This month, we celebrate its 50th anniversary.

At the Smithsonian’s NMAAHC, sited at the foot of the Washington Monument, the meaning and purpose of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom persist today. #MOW60

Phillis Wheatley Peters’ poetry brought her renown in abolitionist circles and presented as proof of the humanity of those of African descent and the inhumanity of slavery.

Our 10 millionth visitor is a symbol of our enduring purpose, and a tribute to the efforts of the past seven years, not to mention the century-long struggle for a monument to African American sacrifice and achievement on the National Mall.

Our museum has received a powerful artwork from artist Rashid Johnson, on loan from the artist’s representative, Hauser & Wirth. The painting, titled “Bruise Painting ‘Message to Our Folks,’” is now on view in the museum’s Heritage Hall space. More: s.si.edu/3RyWlu1

Richard Hunt was a titan among sculptors who created colossal works of art that challenge us to mine the depths of spirituality to find solace & strength, resilience & resolve. His work will continue to keep the message of healing and deliverance alive for generations to come.
