Palmer’s point, for laparoscopy, was described by French gynaecologist Raoul Palmer (1904-1985). He worked at the Hôpital Broca in Paris, and during Nazi occupation made his first attempts at laparoscopy. Due to war shortages, he would make many of his own instruments!

Frank Netter (1906-1991) was a medical illustrator and creator of the Atlas of Human Anatomy. But he was also a physician, having attended the NYU Medical School and completing a surgical internship at Bellevue Hospital, before (briefly) practicing as a surgeon.

Watching this and thinking about my work in Yakima, which, like many places in the PNW, is >70 miles in all directions from another hospital that cares for kids and > 100 miles from a PICU. (cc: Peter Gyimah Kathleen Kieran @WCAAP) nytimes.com/2023/01/04/opi…

When Charrière made instruments, he picked his own unit of measurement that corresponded to 1/3 of a millimeter...this was the 'Charrière'. But English speakers struggled to pronounce 'Charrière', so the companies changed it to 'French'. So 1 'French' became 1/3 millimeter.
