This approach to suddenly cutting NIH grant indirect costs will cause chaos and harm biomedical research and researchers in hospitals, schools and institutes nationwide. A sane government would never do this.

NIH-funded research is responsible for almost everything we know about common risk factors for CVD, not to mention a constellation of life-saving therapies and devices. These transformational advances require a robust research infrastructure dependent on indirect costs from NIH.

This kills biomedical research

The median college/university endowment is $42 Million, not 42 billion like Yale. Those will be the schools forced to limit or cut their research departments because it costs >15% to provide good science infrastructure (e.g. IT, HVAC, gas lines, waste disposal, shared equipment)

Indirect cost supports core lab infrastructure- electricity, heat, water for research, lab safety (biohazard, chemical hazard, etc), facilities and admins. This decision is suicidal for Americans to stay as a leader in science and medical innovation. x.com/NIH/status/188…
