I build stuff and teach math. Saw dust is man glitter. Splinters suck. Smile, laugh, do some math. Opinions are my own.

Without guidance, AI can be confusing and complex and can prevent both adolescents and adults from using the technology ethically and productively. EdSurge AI Is Still an Unknown Country — and Teens Are Its Pioneers edsurge.com/news/2025-06-1…

Poorly-educated social justice warriors are much more malleable than well-educated independent thinkers. Think about that the next time you advocate for improving education and student learning in your state/district and you are dismissed or ignored.

People outside of the education community are often astounded by some of the things they see in it. The fact that it has been so ineffective and dysfunctional for so long while continuing to receive more and more funding is a head scratcher for those who have been in the

While critics paint explicit teaching as boring or uninspiring, the truth is that its structure, pace, and design motivate kids better than any other system. Here is my first post in a series about motivation. This one is about: momentum and perky pace educationrickshaw.com/2025/07/01/dir…

Multiple strategies in math is pitched as am inclusive scaffold, when really they are just poor design. The teacher doesn’t have to bring kids to mastery on an efficient strategy. They can just model a few different ways to do stuff and then say, “use the method you like best.”

Have you ever been lost or trying to follow directions while driving and you turned the music so you could “see better”. You’re not weird or crazy. You were wise to decrease your cognitive load so you could focus more clearly on the task at hand. Turning the music down didn’t

Zach Groshell The multiple strategy approach is one of the biggest problems in elementary math education right now in my opinion. We need to start challenging this more. It’s confusing & time consuming & takes time away from practicing standard methods.

I’ve spent all July at AAU tournaments and I think a lot of kids have the game confused. Basketball IQ Is definitely at an all time low. The best player on the floor will make everyone else around them better. It’s not about dropping 30 points or highlight tapes. If you’re

Not teaching students math facts because they can use calculators, spelling rules because they have spell check, historical dates because they can google it, or writing skills because they have AI is a travesty. Depriving students of these things enslaves them to technology

Can we please get the mental health garbage out of public schools? We once focused on education in public schools. When we did that, students were far more proficient in reading and writing and far less anxious and depressed.

Every minute of the school day is a tradeoff. When you add mental health check-ins, SEL circles, identity talks, etc. but don’t add time, you’re replacing the actual, you know, education part of school with something else. It’s not what parents send their kids to school for.

“It’s all about relationships” sounds lovely, until you realise it means some kids only behave for teachers they like. We don’t let drivers ignore speed limits just because they don’t feel a connection with the police. Schools need systems, not charm. Link in reply...

Students don’t need fidget spinners, yoga balls, mood monitors, or expensive devices and apps to learn. They need knowledgeable teachers, consistent routines, calm classrooms, good books, and unstructured recess. Way more recess.

You can’t wire a kid’s brain for instant stimulation, then expect them to read closely or follow complex ideas. They need to be taught how to think. They need less screen time, not more. Schools should be the antidote to distraction, not the source.

Not every struggle is a disorder. Not every kid needs a label. Often, the best intervention is a stable adult who doesn’t pathologize the ordinary.

So apparently, Sweden went all-in on tablets in the classroom--then saw 4th-grade reading scores tank. Now they're spending €60M to bring back real books, because screens weren't helping. And here in the U.S., only 30% of 8th graders read at grade level, with writing scores just

I have to say, the classical education community has been very kind these past few years as many educators discover the effectiveness of explicit instruction & knowledge-rich curriculum. They have every right to say “we told you so”. Instead they just say “welcome to education”!

I talked to a young man today who was told he had ADHD as a teen. He believed it and took medication for a few months then decided he should just put his phone down and try to focus on his schoolwork more. I wonder how many others like him are out there.
