Ever wonder why housing is so expensive? We've made building ridiculously complicated. 261 sheets complicated. It doesnt have to be this way!

I see you're spending $1,316,614 per new unit of "affordable housing." Have you tried zoning reform? washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2025/…

Funding for affordable housing is limited and we should carefully consider the cost of spending it on frivolous amenities, bureaucratic complexity, and well-intentioned but expensive contracting requirements.

If LA’s government took its housing crisis seriously *at all* it would be beating down the door to open these finished 100% dedicated-Affordable homes permitted under Mayor Karen Bass’s signature program. Instead they’re waiting indefinitely for city departments.

Montreal is once again showing the rest of North America how to transform a lot of streets for people — 8 commercial streets in #Montreal are “pedestrianized” [turned into great people-places] this summer, with 7.3km across 6 boroughs. Plus small sections. montreal.citynews.ca/2025/05/26/mon…

Gotta hand it to the Culver Steps in Culver City. Incredibly successful urbanism, stitched seamlessly into the surrounding grid. Bravo.

Anyone know any good, inexpensive architectural draftsmen? I need someone add labels and some walls to a couple of existing CAD drawings.

A few years back, Darrell Owens (idothethinking on bluesky) and Muhammad Alameldin wrote a piece about how California is the least-welcoming state in the U.S. when it comes to immigrants -- because of our housing policies. That's still true today. While we're protesting. For immigrants' rights.

The Los Angeles Times wrote a story about some gang hits in the Valley. They dropped this anatomical fact about one of the alleged people involved like it's no big deal. Feels like burying the lede, if you asked me.

I'm writing a book. After years of reporting, I realized we've come to expect too much from policy. CAPABLE is about how a well-intentioned distrust of agency has gone too far—sapping our prospects for structural change, and undermining well-being in the process.

There are thousands of people lining Ventura Blvd in Studio City. Never seen anything like this in the Valley. Stealing a line from the late, great Don Shoup: where did they all park?

This is how a seemingly innocuous rule like "provide at least one handicap parking space" can be devastating to urban design -- while doing literally nothing to improve accessibility compared to a blue curbside space and increasing the chances of a pedestrian vs car accident.
