HR 4922, the DC Crimes Act, dismantles DC’s Home Rule by giving Congress direct control of DC’s criminal justice system and overruling DC Council’s ability to legislate. Democrats should be protecting DC’s right of self-government, not aiding the authoritarian takeover of DC.

DC is made up of vibrant communities and hard-working people who are the backbone of our city. We are business owners, veterans, teachers, nurses, police officers, and civil servants. We are Americans who deserve the same freedom to govern ourselves that other Americans enjoy.

DC laws should be written by people who know how DC works.

Members of Congress like this, who come from districts thousands of miles away to our communities here in DC, have no understanding of how DC works, yet push harmful policies that disenfranchise us and destroy our right to govern ourselves. This is why DC statehood matters.

This makes at least two House Republicans who sit on the committee that oversees D.C. yet don't know some pretty basic stuff about how D.C.'s criminal justice system works. (Don't they have staff to prepare them?)
