The best form race globally of 2024? 😲 EIGHT of the first 12 across the line in last year's Golden Eagle have won Group 1 races subsequently, including #RoyalAscot hero Lazzat.

Loved this goal. Watched the game with a then colleague at The Star in Sheffield, Mark Skipworth. Such a tense 90 minutes as Nor'n Iron held on to that narrow lead to qualify for the next phase of the 82 World Cup. Motson is right though, awful goalkeeping by Luis Arconada..

One for my Dutch friend Scott Spits ...the look on Rinus Michels face when Van Basten's volley goes in is priceless. And the pace and power of Gullit's header something to behold..

Free speech means stupid people get to sing stupid things. The right reaction is to mock, criticise and defeat their worldview. Getting police involved is absurd. But once you criminalise some hurty words, you create the demand for all hurty words to be criminalised.

Researching a story on probability + maths in wagering, but some people ignore logic and bet on hunches or superstition. Any of my racing followers, including jockeys and trainers, have superstitions about their mounts, races or how they tackle the game? Dreams of winners? DM me

I know little about horse racing or the people in it, but this is a very moving read from Danny Russell Danny Russell about the terrible loss of someone who seemed a lovely person. RIP to all Peta's friends & family. theage.com.au/national/victo…

Happy retirement to Mitch Langerak. Covered his career from the start - in fact, when The Age was sponsoring Victory (seems like a lifetime ago) I awarded him the club's young player of the year title. Great keeper, brilliant career, top man, should have had more Socceroo caps

In 2001, UK regulated gambling GGY was £9bn — worth £16.9bn today. In 2024, it was £15.6bn (or £16.1bn in today’s money). 📉 4.7% in real terms over 23 years. Those claiming gambling has exploded since the internet and smartphones don’t understand inflation.

Just listening to a Novara Media podcast on AI with an American author, quoting a McKinsey report suggesting that within just five years AI will need between half and 1.2 times the energy power it now uses. Why isn't this widely discussed by people concerned with climate?

Extraordinary finale to the Lions game. Australia will feel they have been let down by the TMO not disallowing the last gasp try for high contact but Lions show great never say die attitude to snatch win having been well behind earlier

🚨 Social Market Foundation proposed betting tax increases will cost every betting shop tens of thousands a year. Potential consequences: 1. Shop closures, job loses 2. Less punters exposed to racing 3. Less media rights & levy 4. More AGCs replacing betting shops Racing shouldn't support

The day had to come when Sonny would leave the Lane, but it feels surreal that it is now here. A sadder moment than when even Kane, Bale et al left, he has been the embodiment of the club and has conducted himself with grace, dignity, style and brilliance for over 10 years

You cannot stop people who want to gamble from gambling. Best to have a regulated product that is better than the black market so people keep using it. Its a win/win/win for gamblers, HMT and operators. In 2018, before the prohibitionists stepped up their campaigns, we had this.

A rain sodden night at the old Olympic Park Heidelberg stadium but that could not dampen the mood of the home fans as they ran out convincing 3-0 winners over A League big boys Western Sydney Wanderers to go forward in the Australia Cup. Great night for the Bergers

Well, Spurs were very good for 85 minutes and then blew it again a ring rusty PSG. Good signs, but if we lose at home to Burnley and then get beaten by Man City watch the knives come out already for Frank. Levy has that many stuck in him already he must be a zombie...

He did, of course, coach South Melbourne against Vasco Da Gama at the Maracana in January 2000 in an inaugural club world championship game. They lost 2-0 but put up a brave display, conceding only in the second half. I covered the game, great atmosphere.youtu.be/s1BXtlaWfZ8?si…

Got involved in this one to debate one of the big issues in the game...hope you find time to listen to a lengthy discussion....
