Only after prison escapes or riots is there any political interest in prisons. Every year, there’s an unacceptable death toll and shocking levels of self harm. Warnings ignored. Decades of systemic crisis and failure and no accountability of Ministers & prison service.

On behalf of all the children caught in this nightmare, we’re calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire. We need unrestricted humanitarian access, immediate and safe release of all abducted children, and protection for all children.

Year after year for the last 20 years at least I’ve called out the state of Harmondsworth Detention Centre in my constituency & called for a public inquiry & for its closure. The latest inspection report repeats what every inspection report has said. Detention is inhuman.

Starmer’s government has so far been deeply ambiguous on immigration communications. Now is the time to clear things up in no uncertain terms & start the work of developing a better, more positive & strategic narrative on immigration. #r4today

On the death of a man in detention yesterday we send heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and everyone who knew and loved him. Brook House is prison architecture and no-one should take their last breath there. We mourn that a young man died before he could be free.
