Exciting to see the new Rafik Anadol sculpture @OregonStatePRAx - the AI-generated visual representation of terabytes of our songbird bioacoustics data from Andrews Forest and the PNW Bioacoustics Project. "When computers dream about bird song". @dfosterhill lurking in back.

It's been a tough few years for the Andrews Forest HJ Andrews Experimental Forest and US LTER with the fires, and the Oregon State Foundation & Alumni Association OSU Foundation is helping us recover. Please consider contributing: damproudday.org/campaigns/h-j-…

Oregon researchers threaten to to use AI to study coastal seabirds... (word placement is everything) opb.org/article/2024/0…

As many questions as answers in this paper: Why such a strong latitudinal gradient in forest species, even after accounting for expected high tropical richness? It is only partially due to high (historical) forest amount. Twitter thoughts appreciated. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.11…

If anyone is going to European Conservation Biology next week and would like to meet up, please DM me. Should be a fun meeting. Presenting on carbon and biodiversity in managed forests.

Congratulations @KendallJefferys for your first scientific paper (and on hummingbirds no less)! Impressive use of species distribution models and long-term BBS data to uncover drivers of rufous hummingbird population declines: ace-eco.org/vol19/iss2/art…

Here we go again: the Ore (2024) fire is pressing in on the NW corner of the Andrews Forest US LTER and threatening to burn what remains of our green forest after the Lookout Fire. Fingers crossed that firefighters remain safe and that the fireline at the HJA boundary holds.

Forest harvest in New Brunswick is resulting in large carbon losses. But storing carbon can also help maintain habitat for declining bird populations. Please help us get the word out about this paper that is being largely ignored by the media: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11…

New research from New Brunswick forests suggests that bird habitat conservation would also benefit carbon storage goals, and debunks claims of climate sustainability from industry. Betts et. al. 2024 doi.org/10.1111/gcb.17…

Recent federal decisions to increase forest management in the US could benefit global biodiversity, but it is critical that we maintain US Forest Service scientific expertise to enable sustainable domestic planning decisions. science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…
