Current school behaviour approaches are failing children. They punish them for having problems, while doing little to help them solve them. It's time we stopped firefighting with ridiculous, childist carrots/sticks approaches #education #educationmatters #edutwitter #childism

When our young people have experienced toxic stress over an extended period of time, their brains and nervous systems are continually scanning the environment for what is safe and what is dangerous. Hyperarousal keeps them in a constant state of stress.🧠🌱

Behaviour is communication & far too often we start in the wrong places. If a behaviour is bottom up,we use bottom-up strategies first starting with safety.Far too often in education we try a top down with rewards & consequences. This doesn't meet the need behind the behaviour.🧠🌱

Idea from Blair Minchin. I have these spread throughout the gym and refer to them as “Pit Stops”. Students may use them when they need to take a break and regulate. #pe #physed

Brains will first ask Am I safe? then. Am I loved? Only when the answer to these is yes, will it then be ready to ask. What can I learn?🧠🌱

Effective teachers don't focus so much on rules, but more on relationships, routines, & expectations. If you focus mainly on rules, you will spend most of the year enforcing them. But if you focus on relationships, routines, & expectations, you rarely have to defer back to rules.
