It’s no secret that Norwich holds a very dear place in my heart. After 1066 it was second only to London in size and influence. I’m trying to rebuilt medieval Norwich in my mind & this video helps! Watch “Global Perspectives: Medieval Norwich” on #Vimeo vimeo.com/237078468

This architectural plan is made of sand glued to paper. Architect Edward Boardman had it made in the 1800s to allow one of his funders, John Gurney, to follow his plans to convert Norwich Castle into a museum. Gurney was blind and read the plans with his hands. #CastleReborn

Built for William the Conqueror’s son, William II (Rufus) in 1097-99, Westminster Hall still stands at the heart of English government today. Its thick stone walls and the extraordinary hammer-beam roof, installed for Richard II at the end of the 14th century, are awe-inspiring.

Landscape painting was Alfred Munnings’s first love and throughout his life he made landscapes, emulating his great East Anglian predecessor, John Constable. He made regular trips to the Wensum valley just a few miles west of Norwich, where this work from 1909 was painted.

Walking through the north aisle of Norwich Cathedral, bathed in the vibrant light of John McLean's Trinity windows, feels like stepping into a symphony of color.

When he became Prime Minister in 1828, Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington was confused by his first Cabinet meeting, writing: ‘An extraordinary affair. I gave them their orders and they wanted to stay and discuss them.’

The atmospheric Prior’s Lodgings, Castle Acre Priory, Norfolk 🥰 Despite the bare space and plain look now, this was once a relatively opulent room…and there are still traces of coloured paint on the fireplace and decoration on the timbers (see photos in comment below)🤩
