Critical evaluation of theory and evidence on the 'Jarman-Bell Principle', a most-influential ideas in herbivore ecology: Bigger animals have less nutritious diets. Is that a real thing? Yes. Do scientists understand it? Not so well. Led by Arjun B. Potter! link.springer.com/chapter/10.100…

Can we build a space of complex, multistable dynamics? How does its structure affect the nature of tipping points in ecosystems, gene nets or cancer-IS interactions? Here's a great paper by Guim Aguadé-Gorgorió Sonia Kefi &co on a taxonomy of multiple states biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

This is such a strange and interesting paper with beautiful figures: nature.com/articles/s4159… The author explains creativity and diversity using causal models, but it certainly helps with getting a good grasp of causal models themselves even if the rest is not your thing.

#PreprintAlert! Super excited to share with y'all a preprint arising from my MS project in Vishu Guttal !! ವಿಶ್ವೇಶ ಗುತ್ತಲ್ 's group arxiv.org/abs/2406.10739 I present an approach to modelling quantitative traits in finite populations using ideas from statistical physics. A quick 🧵

Short exact sequences are a way of formalizing a simple and ubiquitous observation: "Object Y is really just object Z, but with some extra structure described by object X." Or, equivalently: "If I take object Y and I ignore (mod out by) the structure of object X, I get object Z."

I have made the claim, in a series of recent posts, that science is more like a tree than a linear progression and that economics, and macroeconomics in particular, can get stuck on the wrong branch of the tree. Pascal Michaillat shared a link to a paper of his with George
