We have all today been thinking of those who lost friends and loved ones in the awful aircraft crash in Washington last night.

Farewell to our Ambassador Karen Pierce, who has been an inspirational Ambassador to me and to many others within the Embassy and across DC, indeed America. As was remarked last week, she embodies diplomacy at its best with her, “quick wit, fine brain, kind heart”. God speed!

Today I’m in Kyiv to show the UK's support for Ukraine is unbreakable. We are determined to put Ukraine in the strongest possible position against Russia’s barbaric and relentless attacks. Our friendship is cemented for the next century and beyond by our 100-year partnership.

After 491 days of agony, 3 more hostages - including Eli Sharabi who has strong UK links - have finally been released. They and their families have suffered an unimaginable ordeal. The ceasefire deal must be implemented in full, including the release of the remaining hostages.

Together with our international partners, we are maintaining the momentum towards a just and lasting peace for Ukraine. Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke with world leaders today to urge them to keep increasing the pressure on Putin.

We have announced the biggest investment to defence spending since the Cold War because NATO is the cornerstone of Britain’s security. In Brussels, Allies discussed spending more, producing more and delivering more on defence so NATO can become stronger, fairer and more lethal.

In a world burdened by war and poverty, Pope Francis strove for peace and justice. He leaves behind a legacy of a truly global leader who spoke to and for the dispossessed, always with humility and courage.

Today it was a privilege to be in Rome as the world came together to honour His Holiness Pope Francis. Together we grieve his loss and mark his legacy. May he rest in peace.
