Did you know that your colleagues pay for editorial support like this👇? Did you know that women are far more likely to fall out of academia than men? Did you know that as a woman in science you can get free support from us to increase the impact of your papers and grants?👇

It's been really hard for us to get people to apply for our free editing awards. Why is that? In part because people don't know the help is available (so, pls RT). Or they think it's somehow cheating to get help. It isn't. Many successful PIs use editors to help them 👇

Currently reading this and would highly recommend it to all junior scientists (and any senior ones who might be interested in the events surrounding the founding of two major European science institutions, EMBL and the ERC 👇👇) amazon.co.uk/Magic-Collecti…

I made the mistake of not attending enough events and meeting more people during my PhD and Post-docs. If you're close by, do try to join this event. EMBO YIP is a truly outstanding organization that promotes science for young people across Europe and beyond.👇

PhD student Bryce Johnson in my group wrote an excellent opinion piece "Why AlphaFold 3 Needs to Be Open Source" covering the closed-source publication and month of debate that followed. Article: undark.org/2024/06/06/opi… Summary: below

Nobody talks about the harm caused by inappropriate comments from refs during peer review. I’ve seen some that are very patronising. We need to do more to protect our authors. Anyone want to share their experiences? #academicchatter

A picture paints a thousand words, which can be particularly helpful when you're limited to a 5,000 word Nature format. With strong scientific backgrounds, our illustrators can produce sophisticated visuals like graphical abstracts, cover art, schematics, slides and posters 👇

One really simple way to make sure your scientific writing sounds more like music than irritating background noise is to read it out loud.

Our team of former journal editors recently commented on this point👇. Everyone (editors/refs) is under work and time pressure, and nobody has the energy to figure out what you're trying to say if you don't say it clearly in your papers & grants. 📌Write clearly & keep it simple.

Particularly if the gap in the field that your work fills is quite specialised (complex, detailed-sounding), it's important to set the scene and carefully place it into a context. That way, you should be able to explain to an editor or your grandma, why your work is important.👇

Many scientists know in principle how to write a good paper or grant but they struggle to apply it to their own work. The best way we've found to help scientists to write better is to work with them individually or in small groups on their own writing. lifescienceeditors.com

☘ Calling all plant scientists. If you're planning to submit your manuscript to Nature Plants or another top level plant journal, but aren't sure what the editor is looking for, you can now work directly with a former Nature Plants editor, Abel Barral!! lifescienceeditors.com
