I knew, but didn’t fully appreciate until reading this NYT Magazine piece by Linda Villarosa about the dangers of hair relaxers, how my parents truly protected my health and well-being! They encouraged my sister and me to love our natural hair despite anti-Black messaging everywhere.

To anyone in school right now—the path can feel long & winding. It can feel like everything hinges on grades, accomplishments, & “success.” Please remember that your worth goes far beyond all of this. What you’re doing is important, & even so, you deserve time to rest.

Highly recommended to anyone else healing from institutional racism: “Scholars of color are often pushed out of traditional disciplinary departments, forced through bullying, harassment, & hostile work environments… [R]aising problems becomes translated into being the problem.”

I scheduled 3 months of away electives. And so far I have spent $7,000 in rent. Just another reason why students from low income backgrounds (like me) are less likely to become doctors.

I have spent much of the day pondering two questions: Do we spend too much time trying to "fix" our health care system versus spending that time re-creating it? Can change occur through incremental progress or do we need explosive, systemic disruption?

Saving this for every attending that says students these days are weak and undisciplined if dedicated study isn’t long enough and need extra time or are overwhelmed studying for level/step 1 or even failed your first attempt. My copy more than doubled in size from theirs!!

I really needed this. Not finding a permanent faculty position since I graduated 5 yrs ago makes it easy to believe that I’m not good enough, but messages like this remind me that academia’s inability to see my value doesn’t diminish my worth or contribution.
