Elon Musk has succeeded in spite of the way he treats others, not because of it. Belittling is not a leadership strategy—it reflects a lack of self-control. Demeaning doesn't get results—it thwarts productivity. Disrespect for the status quo can be a virtue. Disrespect for

dynomight Similarly, I think Emily Oster's 2020 AER Insights paper deserved to be cited more prominently in this thread x.com/cremieuxrecuei…

Upon reflection, I think it's fair to say Crémieux plagarized this thread from me. Try this in school: Take the whole argument and huge sections of text (unattributed) from some other source, but put some tiny offhand reference at the end. Your teacher will call that plagarism.

Oxford on “due acknowledgment”, via dynomight : “A passing reference to the original author in your own text may not be enough; you must ensure that you do not create the misleading impression that the paraphrased wording or the sequence of ideas are entirely your own.”

I tell students on the first day of class that if you're truly learning it's supposed to feel uncomfortable. The reason is that real learning is not simply the accumulation of facts; it is deep understanding, building mental models of the world, and other higher-level abilities.

This is an incredibly important paper that I think all professors TAs, curriculum designers, EdTech developers working on AI tutoring tools, educational policy makers, academic administrators and et al. should read it

The problem w this approach is that to get to the hard stuff, one has to spend a lot of time doing the stuff that a computer is very good at. AI in education allows you complete work without mastery, leaving you without the foundations for the hard stuff

Not specifically about all the handwringing with AI, but: Are we still sure university instruction and evaluation should be done by the same people?

A question for college professors: if you could wave a magic wand and all your students would have physical books or printouts of course reading, instead of digital texts to read –– do you think that would make a significant difference in educational outcomes?

This Zvi Mowshowitz post on AI cheating is worthwhile and asks many of the right questions. But he's wrong to conclude that AI means what you learn in college doesn't matter. This really misses the point. College builds brainpower like going to the gym builds muscle. 🧵

Andrew Cuomo’s Complicated Legacy in New York City — on transit, homelessness, infrastructure, the pandemic and schools: nytimes.com/2025/06/22/nyr…

When I was in Jackson Heights on Sunday, a Cuomo canvasser told me he actually supported Zohran, but Cuomo was paying $200 a day and "a guy's gotta get money."

The New York Times article about Zohran Mamdani uses information from a hack of Columbia University. This took me a bit by surprise because I remember last year when several news outlets - including the Times - refused to publish the Trump campaign documents that Iran hacked...
