A collaborative effort to preserve nomenclatural & taxonomic congruence: "Description of Asgardarchaeum abyssi gen. nov. spec. nov., a novel species within the class Asgardarchaeia and phylum #Asgardarchaeota in accordance with the #SeqCode" led by Daniel Tamarit & Thijs J. G. Ettema 🦠🔬🇳🇱🇸🇪🇪🇺

Paper out today: “RNA-guided RNA Silencing by an Asgard archaeal Argonaute”. A wonderful, multidisciplinary project co-led with Daan C. Swarts Joo_Lab, spearheaded by Carolien Bastiaanssen Pilar B U Kijun Kim @FinocchioGiada & Yanlei Feng. nature.com/articles/s4146… Nature Communications

Our Viperin evolution paper is now on NatureEcoEvo - This inspirational collaboration with the fabulous Helena Shomar & MDMLab explored how a structurally conserved immune gene diversify in function across the archaea-eukaryote tree of life. nature.com/articles/s4155…

Our latest: Using de novo protein structure prediction and sensitive sequence searches we found many new eukaryotic signature proteins in Asgard archaea, suggesting the archaeal ancestor of eukaryotes was more complex than previously assumed. Stephan Köstlbacher biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

The first isolate of Asgard archaea, MK-D1, now has an official name: Promethearchaeum syntrophicum. The new archaeal kingdom, Promethearchaeati, is also approved! Huge thanks to Masaru K. Nobu and JCM members (加藤真悟) for their incredible efforts. microbiologyresearch.org/content/journa…

Congratulations Roland, Anthony Kohtz, Viola and team on these incredible achievements.

A new substrate for #nitrification by #comammox microbes: #Guanidine So glad to see this out in nature today – great collaborative effort from our @FWF Cluster of Excellence, Universität Wien, team Aalborg Universitet, and UFZ nature.com/articles/s4158…

Super excited to share our new review article on the diversity and ecology of microbial sulfur metabolism. Please RT and share. Chao (Zhichao) Zhou Patricia Tran, PhD nature.com/articles/s4157…

1/11 Excited to share our latest paper in @GenomeResearch: "Complete genomes of Asgard archaea reveal diverse integrated and mobile genetic elements" 🧬🦠 The Banfield Lab

New paper alert: Our 20-year study of viral ecology and evolution reveals viral roles in microbial dynamics, phage genome evolution over time, and key interactions with hosts. Chao (Zhichao) Zhou Patricia Tran, PhD Cody Martin Robin Rohwer Trina McMahon 🌪 @archaeal nature.com/articles/s4156…
