mf trained a simple model to translate ada-002 embeddings back to text and found something interesting: sentence embeddings have arithmetic properties the classic "king - man + woman = queen" still works just like w/ token embeddings — but can go a few steps beyond that as well

Our lab's first preprint is up! We identify a trojan horse RNA virus, A. odysseus, hiding in the human-infecting parasite, T. gondii. A crazy story; this virus could explain why the 1994 Victoria, BC toxoplasmosis outbreak was so hypervirulent. 👉 biorxiv.org/content/10.110… 👈

What makes cortical areas different? We used BARseq to sequence 10.3 million cells across 9 mouse brains in situ. We found that cortical areas have distinct cell type compositions that are shaped by peripheral inputs. biorxiv.org/content/10.110… 1/17

A team led by University of Toronto researchers has found >100 genes in primate brains that have evolved to be expressed differently in humans. These genes could be the source of our unique cognitive ability – and are also associated with #brain disorders. Learn more 👉 uoft.me/BrainGenes

The first cellular map of a mammalian brain is here. 🧠✨ Over 6 years and 32 million cells in the making, the complete adult mouse brain cell-type atlas reveals astonishing diversity and regional specificity. Dive deeper: alleninstitute.org/scientists-unv… @nature #studyBRAIN #BICCN

We now know the locations of cell types in a full mammalian brain. Our work reveals the brainstem’s absolutely stunning cellular complexity. How and why does it arise? Visit braincelldata.org to plot genes, localize types, and get markers. nature.com/articles/s4158…

Study by University of Toronto, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, & Allen Institute uncovers 100+ genes common to primate brains but underwent evolutionary divergence in humans & may be source of cognitive differences. In this study, poor oral health was associated with worse neuroimaging #BrainHealth profiles. Genetic analyses confirmed these associations, supporting a potentially causal association. Read the article: bit.ly/3S6orgw #NeuroTwitter

Very excited to share a new work on AUPRC, AUROC, and class imbalance: arxiv.org/abs/2401.06091 The short of it? Despite widespread belief, AUPRC is not superior to AUROC under general class imbalance and it can exacerbate biases towards subpopulations with higher prevalence.

This tweet is exactly what you would expect to see in a world where AI capabilities are growing: last years very hard math tests built to challenge AI are already getting solved, we need much harder tests. Feels like the background news story in the first scene of a scifi drama.

Cannabis-induced psychosis (CIB) is directly associated with high-potency (>10%) THC products. As a Psychiatrist in Seattle, I'm constantly shocked how often I see (CIB). Seattle THC % in 2005: 5% Seattle THC % in 2025: 25% All cannabis is high-potency cannabis now.

I have a guest essay in The New York Times today about autonomous vehicle safety. I wrote it because I’m tired of seeing children die. Done right, we can eliminate car crashes as a leading cause of death in the United States Waymo recently released data covering nearly 100 million
