SAS doctors have already specialised. Hence they are called Specialty Doctors or Specialists (the only two currently open SAS grades). The clue is in the job title. They’re not randomly deployable minions…

1. During SAS week, we introduced our six asks, the #SASsix, and this seems like a good opportunity to do so again. How about a thread on supporting SAS careers to start off Wednesday morning?

2. Within the medical workforce, there are an increasing number of locally-employed doctors, without the protections of a national SAS contract. We think this is concerning. The SAS contracts exist for them, and we should use them.

3. Specialty Doctors who are early in their careers need support to develop. We think everyone should have the opportunity to grow their careers. Reaching your individual potential is important, and is good for services and patients, as well as individual doctors.

4. As doctors develop, they should become more senior, experienced and independent. Progression to the senior contract should therefore be a normal part of being a SAS doctor. Some may also wish to become consultants by the "portfolio pathway", formerly known as CESR.

5. In order to make these alternative career pathways more viable, we need more SAS doctors delivering education, to increase capacity. We also need SAS doctors to reach their individual potential as leaders and managers. These things should be normal. #SASsix

Merry Christmas to all those working in the NHS today Many staff in the NHS are grossly underpaid (even on Christmas day👇) but none more so than Junior Doctors who frequently graduate with >£100k debt RT to support them & ask government to pay them ALL fairly #PayRestoration
