[1/2] We’ve released a new version of the factsheet on #Birchgletscher, the Swiss glacier that collapsed on 28 May 2025 following heavy debris loading from Kleines Nesthorn -- and some first field impressions that we were able to collect yesterday 🗂polybox.ethz.ch/index.php/s/ea…

Eruption am Ätna bis 6.5km Höhe ist nach VAAC schon wieder vorbei, dafür viel Waldbrandasche aus Kanada über Grönland-Island und Saharastaub aus Afrika über der Karibik 😲

BREAKING: A Florida meteorologist just went on air and said he can’t accurately report the weather anymore, because Trump’s DOGE cuts gutted the satellite data he relies on. We’re not just defunding science, we’re sabotaging public safety. And for what? So a billionaire

Looks like the ECMWF seasonal model is indicating the development of a Central Atlantic Nino, meaning the +SST anom. are focused from around 30-15W longitude instead of in the Gulf of Guinea (10W-10E).

Check out just how far wildfire smoke has spread! Since late May, smoke has swirled more than 5,000 miles from Canada to Russia, according to my analysis using Copernicus ECMWF data. Smoky skies have also been spotted in parts of Europe, Greenland and the Arctic Archipelago.

Yesterday's ECMWF seasonal forecast certainly raised the stakes for unusual heat across central and southern Europe. For this region, it's the warmest Jul-Sep forecast in the model's history (June init). However - there isn't much skill beyond simply the long-term trend.

#Barbara is now a #hurricane - the first hurricane-strength tropical cyclone of the 2025 Northern Hemisphere season. Barbara is the latest 1st Northern Hemisphere hurricane since 1993.

Atlantic seasonal #hurricane forecast update from Colorado State University continues call for an above-normal season: 17 named storms, 9 hurricanes & 4 major hurricanes. Relatively warm Atlantic and likely absence of #ElNino are the primary factors. tropical.colostate.edu/Forecast/2025-…

From doing a quick perusal, I am honestly pretty impressed by this new AI TC model that Google is running. This shows more intensity skill in retrospective mode than any AI system I've seen so far. I'll be very curious to see how it does in "real-time" this year (that's always

Our #CopernicusAtmosphere aerosol optical depth forecast initialised on 11 June showed a complex mixture of aerosols over Europe in recent days with smoke transport from Canadian wildfires interspersed with a plume of Saharan dust. See the latest charts: atmosphere.copernicus.eu/charts/package…

I updated the PolarWx model forecast vs. ERA5 records map to include 2024 in the ERA5 record period (1950-2024, previous maps were 1950-2023). The upcoming East US ridge will set near-record annual maximum geopotential heights... the previous record was set in June of last year.

The tongue of Rhone #Glacier ten days after my last visit. Can you guess how much ice melted away? 1️⃣ meter in terms of thickness! 1️⃣0️⃣ days... And that's just the beginning of the summer season. We know the times are bad for the ice, but still it is hard to accept these numbers!

Hunting the extreme year 2022... Yes, I'm really worried about the current state of Swiss #glaciers! After a dry winter, the scorching heat of the last weeks pushes glaciers towards another black year. Hoping for some cooling but the summer has only just started VAW Glaciology
