Excited to see Dan Mills' paper up on the arXiv! Adam Frank, Jennifer Macalady @jmacalad.bsky.social, and I had a great time helping him put it all together. Dan takes a hard, critical look at the "Hard Steps" model (and the Great Filter) and finds it's not well supported. arxiv.org/abs/2408.10293

This matters because the Hard Steps and Great Filter models have a lot of popular salience and get cited a lot, but notably not by biologists, whom you would think would be in the best position to use it. It turns out a lot of its assumptions are just incorrect!
