LabourList and Shopkeepers' Campaign's event reviewing what the #AutumnStatement means for high streets is underway! Jerry Schurder kicks us off by arguing the business rates system has "become unsustainable" and describing the measures set out by the Chancellor as "smoke and mirrors"

Inflation is to fall to below 2% in a few months, so how can jeremy hunt justify increasing #businessrates in April by 6.7% for over 220,000 large businesses? He can't, but I doubt he will pull a rabbit out of the hat and abandon the increase. Hope I'm wrong. #springbudget2024

So it seems #businessrates will leap in April by 6.7% for over 220,000 properties? Had it been limited to the OBR 2% forecast in coming months biz would have saved £1.16bn next year and >£6bn over 5 yrs. What happened to the rates cut promised in the Conservative 2019 manifesto?

The Liberal Democrats commitment to replace #businessrates with this land tax is all but undeliverable. The UK has no register of land ownership, values could not be established fairly given the absence of reliable evidence and tax collection from overseas owners would be challenging.

The Conservatives promised to cut #businessrates for retailers in the 2019 manifesto - but didn't deliver. Their 2024 plan is to increase the already excessive tax on warehouses rather than do what is really needed to support the high street, i.e to slash bills for all.

The Rateable Values of all large distribution warehouses in England at £2.65bn is dwarfed by £21.6bn for retail leisure and hospitality (RLH). The consequence is that it would be impossible to make a meaningful #businessrates cut in RLH bills by increasing those for sheds.

Labour promised to abolish #businessrates as long ago as Autumn 2021. So it is disappointing in the extreme that in the intervening years it seems to have made as good as no progress in identifying its replacement. Labour owes business the details – not vague platitudes.

King’s Speech 2024: Full list of 40 key policy bills – via LabourList tinyurl.com/y88pabm6. Hmm - flagship Labour policy for 3 years and in manifesto was abolition of #businessrates but not a sniff of that in the planned Bills. Into the long grass again?!

Agreed. Government must look at #businessrates reform within the basket of taxes not in isolation. This report shows that over time a 20% cut in rates will lead to net positive revenues for the Exchequer. Action is required at the Autumn Budget giving retailers certainty to plan.

1.7% inflation feeds into a £3bn+ #businessrates increase in April - most of which falls on the beleaguered retail, hospitality and leisure sectors (RHL). Significant intervention required at #Budget2024 to remove inflation increase and extend the 75% RHL discount.

Seems like the only part of #Budget2024 that hasn't been leaked relates to #businessrates. Given that its replacement was adopted >3 years ago as Labour policy Rachel Reeves ought to be able to launch her 'oven ready' scheme. I fear we're set for yet another consultation😠.

Jerry Schurder (@jerryschurder) 's Twitter Profile Photo

#businessrates madness. Retail leisure and hospitality relief being slashed from 75% to 40% - this more than doubles bills overnight for hundreds of thousands of small high street businesses. How on earth does this deliver on the manifesto commitment to support these sectors?!

Jerry Schurder (@jerryschurder) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Manifesto- 'Labour will replace the #businessrates system...new system will level the playing field between the high street and online giants, better incentivise investment .. and support entrepreneurship.' How does more than doubling rates bills for 250,000 SMEs achieve this?

Jerry Schurder (@jerryschurder) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Oh no - not another consultation on #businessrates reform - biz is suffering from consultation constipation about this much reviled tax. What has The Labour Party been doing in the 3 years since it announced its policy to abolish rates? tinyurl.com/22btmhcu

Excellent to see Valuation Office Agency taking action in this way. Businesses need to be protected from possible rogue agents when taking #businessrates advice. Temporary suspension of business rates agents gov.uk/government/new…
