Phonics plays a vital role in children learning to read and write. But it must be set within the context of a broad and balanced literacy curriculum, fuelled by quality texts and rich learning experiences. This is what Dominic Wyse and I explore in The Balancing Act. 20% off👇🏽

The Little Rebels Award always fills the CLPE #LiteracyLibrary, tonight is no exception, as Farrah Serroukh welcomes participants to what is always a wonderful celebration of radical fiction for children.

Had a blast at the Little Rebels Award with Helen Rutter & Frances Moloney. Insightful panel hosted by Darren Chetty and an incredible event overall. It’s the people who made it all so special ✨🫶Congrats to J.T. Williams on the win! 🎉 #LittleRebelAwards

Dear Little Rebellers: thank you to all of you, our #LittleRebelsAward community, for making our award night so special. You filled the room with joy- and kept us organisers buoyed all evening. 🎈🎈🎈 And thank you CLPE for allowing us to host in your luxurious literary space!

As if 𝙰𝚕𝚊𝚗𝚗𝚊 𝙼𝚊𝚡' output of supremely high-quality picturebooks for early readers wasn't enough, they're also delightful enough to furnish Team CLPE with these gorgeous 'Lulu Meets the Bees' notebooks (note as well the seed paper AI sheet)! 🐝🌱🌼

This, and the National Literacy Trust survey data will come as no shock to those in the know about teaching reading (including appropriate and good quality teaching of phonics!) but should be seriously looked at in the Curriculum and Assessment Review, if decisions are made on evidence.

Encourage everyone, children's publishing or not, to read this year's CLPE #ReflectingRealities report. Such a significant drop in representation is what many of us feared post 2020 ◼️

The 7th annual #ReflectingRealities report is published today. Brilliant, vital work from our friends CLPE. This year's survey shows an extremely concerning decline in the presence of racially minoritised characters in books published for children in 2023 in the UK.

Devastated to hear of the passing of Morag Styles. Such an incredible scholar of the power of picturebooks and poetry for children and one of the biggest influences on my work. So privileged to have known and learned from her. She leaves behind such an incredible legacy.

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Morag Styles, a champion of children’s poetry and picturebooks and a great influence on our work at CLPE. On multiple occasions Morag chaired and judged the CLPE Poetry Award. A huge loss to the world of children’s literature.
