If you are sleeping rough, you can still be fined up to £1,000 under the Vagrancy Act. This is unjustifiable in 21st century Britain. What’s going on!? 🧵 1/7

Keir Starmer says he’ll end homelessness—and we’re holding him to it. Join us to urge the UK Government to build more social homes, fix our support systems and prevent homelessness before it starts. Sign our open letter: bit.ly/3FoTpfV

📢We’re calling on Keir Starmer and the UK Government to take bold action to end homelessness. Rising living costs and a lack of affordable homes are pushing more people into homelessness than ever before. But we can change this. Sign our open letter: bit.ly/3FoTpfV

Today, the government announced plans to change benefits and employment support. Some of the changes providing more support for people to be able to work are welcome, but risk being undermined by plans to cut financial support for people with disabilities.

“It feels like the announcements today will build more barriers for people who need help, and in some sense is giving with one hand and taking with the other.

“Lots of people I speak to use Personal Independence Payment (PIP) to travel around, and support themselves for daily living. There are positives in helping people get back to work but the changes to PIP are worrying.

Crisis (@crisis_uk) 's Twitter Profile Photo

“For me too, I use PIP for that and cutting it would dramatically change my life. We shouldn't be taking away people's independence. Cutting PIP in the future will impact people who are homeless with disabilities, and their ability to get to services and live the life they want.

“I want the Government to know that if someone is homeless and living in temporary accommodation, fighting to get a property, and often suffering from anxiety&depression, and you're getting less help financially, it only makes things worse.”

🚨No, this isn’t an April Fool’s joke. 🤡 As of today (1 April), housing benefits are frozen until 2026. This is pushing people deeper into poverty and towards homelessness.

A new report from Crisis supported by Health Equals and including analysis with @zoopla shows: Just 2.7% of private rents are affordable for people in Britain needing housing benefits. This means for many people who are homeless, a more permanent home is out of reach.

Crisis (@crisis_uk) 's Twitter Profile Photo

This means more people will be forced to sleep rough or stay in poor-quality temporary accommodation. This can have devastating effects on their health.

We’re calling on the UK Government to restore housing benefit so that it matches the true cost of rent. Your MP has the power to help make this happen. Email your MP today and urge them to act bit.ly/3E41KW7

Our new study with Health Equals & Zoopla shows just 2.5% of private rentals in England are affordable for people on housing benefit. The Gov must reverse the decision to freeze housing benefits to prevent more people on low incomes facing homelessness. theguardian.com/money/2025/apr…

Freezing housing benefits runs the risk of people having to sleep rough, or remain in temporary accommodation that damages their health & wellbeing. We're calling on the UK Gov to restore housing benefit to match the true cost of rent. Email your MP today.bit.ly/3E41KW7

A powerful report from the Housing, Communities & Local Government Committee today spotlights a broken housing system where hundreds of thousands of children are growing up never knowing a home of their own & more than one a month is dying from the conditions in which they are forced to live. standard.co.uk/news/politics/…

To ensure fewer children grow up homeless, the Westminster government must restore housing benefit so that it reflects the true cost of renting & invest in the 90,000 social homes we need each year. Join our campaign for a future free from Homelessness: crisis.org.uk/get-involved/c…

Really pleased BBC Money Box chose to shine a light on social housing, expertly covered by the brilliant Felicity Hannah. Our lack of social homes is a big driver of homelessness. Have a listen below to hear me & Alastair Smyth National Housing Federation deep dive into this important topic!

We know we need more social housing. Around 10,000 social homes are built each year, far lower than the 90,000 a year we need. What’s stopping us? Jasmine Amber joined Andy Burnham @AnnaMinton Richard Hyde to discuss this question on Radio 4s Rethink👇 bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0…

🚪Two doors. Two futures. Only one real option. Today in Westminster, we came together with Shelter, National Housing Federation and more in solidarity to show the government what's at stake at next week’s Spending Review.

The Chancellor can either: 👉Keep pushing people into homelessness and spending billions on temporary accommodation 👉Or invest in a future built on secure and genuinely affordable social homes. Rachel Reeves has an opportunity to build a lasting legacy. All eyes on 11 June.
