A major earthquake has caused many casualties in Afghanistan. This adds death and destruction to other challenges including drought and the forced return of millions of Afghans from neighbouring countries. Hopefully the donor community will not hesitate to support relief efforts.

The recent earthquake has affected more than 500,000 people in E Afghanistan — aid from donors, including Pakistan, is vital and welcome. Especially given the circumstances, I appeal to the Government of Pakistan to pause the implementation of the Illegal Foreigners Repatriation Plan.

UNHCR’s emergency supplies, including thousands of emergency shelters, have begun reaching some of the most remote & difficult to reach parts of Kunar province. Supplies for nearly 6,000 families are being distributed by our partner CHA, with a focus on those most vulnerable.

I'm heading to #Myanmar, where millions are displaced and impacted by war, away from the news. As in other crises, we continue to advocate for an end to fighting, access to those in need and the creation of conditions for the safe and voluntary return of refugees and displaced.

Ending today a visit to Myanmar. Wars, disasters, displacement, hunger: the forgotten plight of so many people in Myanmar, like the Rohingya, never ends. In a world becoming scary, they have lived in fear for years. They, too, deserve political attention and humanitarian aid.
