The Black Gate was added to Newcastle Castle c1250, with a drawbridge at the front & back. It was later used as a private home, a pub, & a slum tenement.

Though built to a 1930s design, Newcastle's Baltic Flour Mill didn't open until 1950 due to the interruption of World War I. Decades later it was transformed into Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in 2002.
