We have been calling for the extension of free school meals for years (see report from 2021). The evidence for its impact on young people, their heath and their educational outcomes is clear. This will make a huge difference. Well done Bridget Phillipson ippr.org/articles/build…

Astonishing chart on income from second jobs since the last election by MP by David Dubas-Fisher. Wild disparity between Nigel Farage and the rest. This, quite simply, shouldn’t be allowed. We need to talk about second jobs for MPs!

Today we lay bare a decade of broken promises as we reveal how the disparity in transport spending between the North & London has ballooned If the North had seen the same transport investment as London under the previous government, it would have received £140bn more

Massive moment for Rachel Reeves. The spending review will reveal the govts priorities and the degree to which they can achieve their missions. Lots of details to look out for in the weeks that follow including NHS Long Term Plan and Industrial Strategy. Me for BBC News (UK)

The Chancellor faces some tough choices at today’s Spending Review. But overall we have to remember that this is not austerity 2.0. Spending is increasing. The big question hanging over the SR is can the govt reform what we do with that money to deliver better outcomes!

Harry Quilter-Pinner (@harry_qp) 's Twitter Profile Photo

The slightly doom laden commentary around the SR has masked the fact that this is a massive increase in spending. Day to day spending up £190bn and capital spending up by over £100bn. These are vis-a-vis big cuts implied by last govt but still major!

Even after raised taxes and increased borrowing, the government still had to make tough choices today. Much needed increases are a step in the right direction, but major challenges remain in social care, universities and more. Harry Quilter-Pinner reacts to the #SpendingReview

Agreed: securonomics is back. Lots of references to made in Britain. This the right call in my book: good policy and good politics.

šŸŖ™Harry Quilter-Pinner gets into what the implications of the spending review for the taxpayer on ITVX - as well looking ahead at Wes Streeting's work to be done on the NHS, and what it might mean for the autumn budget

Harry Quilter-Pinner (@harry_qp) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Is the 3% settlement for the NHS achieved by the NHS enough? That will depend on how bold Wes Streeting’s reform plan is - due out in the coming weeks. If he can get productivity in the NHS up, and prevent people from getting sick, yes it will. Otherwise it’s going to be tough.

Really important piece of work by IPPR North arguing for bus reform to drive growth, tackle the cost of living crisis and reduce isolation. Great to see our Mayor’s championing change! Thanks Steve Rotheram Worth a watch ā¬‡ļø

The government has fully funded everything it announced in yesterday’s #SpendingReview. But if it wants to do more, it will have to look at taxes. šŸ“» Harry Quilter-Pinner spoke to Kait Borsay šŸ‘‡

This is such exciting news. As i’ve written about before pedestrianising central london and combining this with investment in walking, cycling and public transport is the right thing environmentally, for our health and for making our cities more successful theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

Harry Quilter-Pinner (@harry_qp) 's Twitter Profile Photo

The NHS Long Term Plan is ā€˜the moment of truth’ for this government. Will it be able to use the money invested, increase productivity and deliver better outcomes that people feel up and down the country? This will take really radical reform from the government.

British decline in one story. Any state which finds itself incapable of managing a project as basic as rolling out a 20th century tech between its biggest cities needs to ask itself some profound questions about what hope it has of managing the technologies of the 21st.

Don’t think I’ve read something that capture UK politics of 2025 than this from Patrick Maguire this para hits it on the head. People we speak to every week in focus groups largely don’t give a stuff about left and right, they just want life to be less of a struggle (link next)
